Grand Theft Auto Retrospective Pt 6 San Andreas
The Grand Theft Auto Retrospective Part 6

Today we are once again look back on the history of one of the biggest game series of all time, Grand Theft Auto!

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (2004,2005) PlayStation 2, PC, Xbox

When it comes to this era of Grand Theft Auto games it is fair to say that San Andreas is probably the most loved. Released first on PlayStation 2 in 2004, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas would go on to be one of the biggest selling games on the PlayStation 2 and one of the most critically acclaimed as well.

This time the game was set in the 1990’s and you played the role of CJ who comes home after his mother’s funeral (she was murdered) to find his family in a mess. CJ tries to get his old gang back, has run in with crooked cops and ends up in trouble with the gang war that is going on in San Andreas. The riots and gang wars of the 1990’s are a huge influence on the game and in general, the story has a lot of twists and turns and at the time it was the most story driven of the GTA games.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was huge! The map was absolutely massive and there was just so much to do in San Andreas. You could spend hours exploring the map, taking on side quests and finding all kinds of weird stuff. RockStar also added in some RPG elements to the game where you could actually tinker with CJ’s appearance.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is one of the most popular games in the whole GTA series. The following year it would be released on Xbox and PC. But the game is so popular that it would even be released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and even mobile devices.

We are now ten games into our epic Grand Theft Auto retrospective, get ready for one hell of a ride!

Grand Theft Auto IV (2008) PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC

For the fourth game in the Grand Theft Auto series, RockStar wanted something a little more real and gritty than what the past few games had offered. For this, they took the game back to Liberty City. This time though, Liberty City was much larger and far more realistic and was actually based on New York.

Grand Theft Auto was heavily story driven. You play as Niko Bellic who has moved to the USA from Serbia to see his cousin Roman, work for him, have a better life and in general live the American dream. The story is very well written and it is as much the supporting cast of characters that you must deal with that really make it as much as Niko himself. Before long, Niko is pulled into the world of crime and violence. GTA IV was so gritty and violent that it caused a ton of controversy.

As well as the single player, Grand Theft Auto IV also had a co-op and competitive multiplayer which supported up to 32 players which was pretty huge at the time.

Grand Theft Auto IV was the first GTA game to be released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It was not only critically acclaimed but at the time of release, it was the fastest selling video game… actually, forget that. It was the fastest selling piece of entertainment in history! It was also supported with DLC, which we will look at another time!
